Our history

Discover Château de Brossay

A vineyard in the Loire Valley, the estate is particularly renowned for its Anjou wines. A 15th-century manor house, Château de Brossay looks out towards the springs of the Layon and its stony hillsides. It is located on a terroir with clay-gravel soils over schist. Founded in 1919 by Alexis Deffois, the estate is now managed by the fourth generation of winegrowers, producers of Anjou wines. In 2010, Nicolas Tamboise and Benjamin Grandsart joined Raymond and Hubert Deffois, grandsons of Alexis Deffois.

The vineyard

The vineyard is located south of the Loire, near the Deux-Sèvres department. It covers an area of 50 ha and lies on the south-facing slope of the hillside between Cléré-sur-Layon and Passavant-sous-Layon. Château de Brossay benefits from a dry microclimate, with mild winters and hot summers with plenty of sunshine. Rainfall is low throughout the year, often below 600 mm of water per year. This terroir is ideal for producing great Coteaux du Layon.

Our vineyard practices

As producers of Anjou wines, we are certified High Environmental Value (HVE) Level 3. Integrated pest management is carried out through vineyard interventions that take into account the weather, the soil and vine vigour. Soil cultivation is performed between the rows to avoid chemical weeding, with a view to improving the agronomic characteristics of our soils.

Cover cropping, carried out on part of the vineyard, is sown between each vine row to reduce vine vigour. The effects are beneficial for nature and for the vine. In addition, we also ensure traceability of our practices by regularly recording our interventions in the vineyards and in the cellar.
